Details of the Accident
At 4:30EST on Saturday the 23rd John was travelling north on Highway 27. There was severe weather in the area and his Honda hydroplaned. The car was totalled. Family members have seen the car and described the damage as disturbing. No one has seen a police report yet, so we are not clear on the details. Updates forth-coming.
John was taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. The ER ordered an initial CT scan and diagnosed a small head bleed. This is not like a cut. This is an internal bleed around the brain. John was transferred to the ICU. He was awake and alert, even a little feisty. He was complaining and asking for pain medication.
Around 9:00pm Saturday evening John began vomitting. Around 10:30 there was a second CT scan that revealed a massive head bleed on the left side. John was taken to surgery to deal with the bleed and remove any clots around midnight. The surgery lasted about 2.5 hours and was successful. By the 5:00am visitation on Sunday morning he was groggily responding to commands. He's been improving rapidly ever since. They are weening him off the ventilator, and they expect him to be breathing on his own Tuesday. He's doing very well, and at this point we are all hopeful of a full recovery. He is still in the ICU so visitation is limited.

It looked bad for a while Saturday night and Sunday morning, and with these injuries you're never out of the woods until you're... well... out of the woods. But the family pulled together. John's daughter Joy drove all night to get there. Julie has been there since late Saturday night doing everything she can to help. They've gotten a hotel and will be there for as long as it takes. John's siblings came to Chattanooga as well.
